PhD offers@HCI

I am looking for a new PhD student or postdoc to join my team (see at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Campus Hagenberg for 3 years.

You will join my team as a fully employed Research Associate and by this get the possibility to either

1.) do a fully funded PhD in Computer Science (in cooperation with the Prof. Dr. Gabriele Anderst-Kotsis of the Institute of Telecooperation at Johannes Kepler University Linz) or

2.) work as a (postdoc) researcher to gather scientific experience and publications.

If desired, there will be plenty of opportunities to gather experience with teaching as well, but this is not a must.

Hours: Full-time (40h/week)

Salary: Monthly salary starts at EURO 2,742.99. There is an additional 13th and 14th salary each year. Depending on your qualification (e.g. PhD or job experience), entry salary might be higher

Start Date: ASAP (ideally Oct or Nov 2018)

Contract: Up to 3 years

Location: Campus Hagenberg (near Linz, Austria)

You will work within a new EUR 1.2 mio research project funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). Your task with will be to explore the use of novel interaction techniques and devices for collaborative interactive visualization and simulation of 3D engineering models. You will work with my team to design, prototype, and study novel visual, touch, or haptic user interfaces that enable engineers at different locations to collaboratively navigate and manipulate a shared 3D model and to visualize and review results of mechanical simulations.

More concretely, you will help to design, build, and test HTML5/JavaScript-based user interfaces for the Microsoft Surface Hub 84” (or similar large screens) and to integrate multi-touch, pen, and other input/output techniques into the UIs, so that engineers from our School of Engineering can collaboratively edit and simulate mechanical properties of 3d models (e.g. offroad racing buggies, motorcycles). These user interfaces will be a core component of the project’s overall goal to enable a distributed simulation and modelling of cyberphysical systems.

Key requirements:

– scientific curiosity, independent thinking, and creative problem-solving skills

– Master’s degree or doctorate in computer science, human-computer interaction, information visualization, interaction design or similar

– familiarity with user interface programming of 2D or 3D user interfaces using HTML5 / JavaScript / Meteor / or similar

– familiarity with (or willingness to learn about) empirical research methods in HCI including qualitative and quantitative methods, experiment design, statistical analysis

– previous experience with HCI research and with writing publications for international conferences are a plus

The University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (“FH Oberösterreich”) has 5,900 students at four locations in and around the city of Linz (pop. 200,000) and is located in the center of Austria’s industrial heartland and close to scenic regions and nature reserves in the Alps, the Bavarian Forest, and the Bohemian Forest. It is the most successful university of applied sciences in terms of research funding and considered one of the leading Austrian institutions for applied research. The campus in Hagenberg (“FH Hagenberg”) is home to the School of Informatics, Communications and Media with many activities in the fields of human-computer interaction, software engineering, and interactive systems including the Master degree program “Human-Centered Computing”.
